1. What’s the difference between TED and TEDx?
TED (short for Technology, Entertainment, Design) started back in 1984 as a global platform for sharing ideas worth spreading. TED hosts major conferences featuring world-class speakers and distributes those talks online for a global audience.
TEDx is a little different. It’s a program of independently organized local events that operate under a free license from TED. While TEDx events follow the TED format, they're rooted in local voices, stories, and communities. TEDxStLouis is one of those local events, proudly tailored to the St. Louis region.
2. Is TEDxStLouis a nonprofit?
Yes! TEDxStLouis is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization supported by our community, partners, and sponsors. We’re proud to operate under our registered nonprofit Employer Identification Number (EIN) is 61-1716231.

We host events across St. Louis at venues that reflect the spirit of community—like the Missouri History Museum, Touhill Performing Arts Center, The Sheldon, COCA, and more.
5. How often does TEDxStLouis hold events?
We hold multiple events each year, including our signature TEDxStLouis show, TEDxStLouisWomen, youth gatherings, and virtual programs. Each one has its own unique theme designed to inspire and spark dialogue.
6. How are themes for events chosen?
Our team thoughtfully curates themes based on what’s current, compelling, and conversation-worthy. We aim to ignite curiosity and shine a light on both local and global ideas.
Becoming a Speaker
7. Can anyone apply to be a TEDxStLouis speaker?
Yes! Anyone with a bold idea can apply. You don’t need to be a seasoned public speaker—just someone with a meaningful perspective. We seek people with ties to the St. Louis area so we can offer in-person support. Ready to share your idea? Here’s where to apply.
8. Are all TEDxStLouis speakers selected through the open application and audition process?
Not exclusively. We use a hybrid model: some speakers are invited, and others are selected through open auditions. This keeps our stages fresh and diverse.
9. What makes a good TEDx talk?
A great TEDx talk centers around one big, original idea that challenges assumptions, opens minds, or inspires change, all wrapped in a powerful, well-told story.
10. How long are TEDx talks?
Talks range from 8 to 12 minutes, with a max of 18 minutes. We work closely with speakers to ensure each minute delivers value.
11. How are speakers coached or prepared?
Each selected speaker joins a four-month coaching program that includes 40+ hours of dedicated work. From 1:1 coaching and group workshops to peer feedback and stage rehearsals, the goal is to craft a resonant, unforgettable talk.
